life as a revinry worker
it was the early 1900s and i was just a young boy probley about 12 years old. we were a farming family over in scotland. but we was just working to hard every single day and not making nothing but enough to barley live. so my parents and family decided it was time to leave the country because there was nothing left here for us. so we heard of a oppertunity in the country of america so we got on a ship and sailed over on a ship called the mary lou. it took us about 3 weeks to make it to america and when we got there we dident have much money so we had to go live in what was once a bedroom me and my family all fit in. it was uncomfortable but we had to deal with it till we found work. then it was like a miricle this young man named john d. rockefeller started a oil company called standard oil and he was making refineries everywhere and one happened to be by where we lived which was clevland. so me and my family started working at the refinery and it was a help to us and gave us alot more money.
every day i wake up and have to go to work just so my family can live. i dont eat food in the morning because we dont have enough of it so i only eat when i get home and thats after i work all day at the revineries. it real hard work in the revinarys becuase its always dirty i work on one of the oil wells it self so i have to drill the hole to find the oil and when one of the oil pockets blows it goes every where but its the best feeling i have it just sprays about 20 feet in the air but then we have to get it in the drums to send it to the refineries. we was hitting oil pockets all the time and work wasnt that bad we was starting to have money then my dad fell off the oil rig which was about 30 feet in the air and he ended up breaking his legs so i am the only one working now. it was starting to get hard to support my whole family. but then mr.rockefeller gave my dad some money so he could support my family till he got better and about a year later he was back at work and i was working the whole time. i am about 15 years old now and thinking about myself and starting my life so mr.rockefeller was fighting with the comodor about the trains so he stoped doing bussiness with them and started building a pipe line and he wanted the pipe laided down fast so he was paying more for the pipe layers so i left my family and went on my own to lay the pipe. pipe laying was alot harder work but payed more so i woke up every morning same routine layed pipe ate then slept and did it all again. but one day a big peice of pipe fell on me and hurt me bad so i went back to a revinary down in the east. so i was working there then the train people tryed making a pipeline so mr rockefeller shut down all the revineries that need oil shipped by trains so i was out of a job. so i went looking for a job and there was a guy named tom scott and he owend 40 percent of the railroads and he liked me alot so he made me his apprentice and i was doing really good for myself i even had enough money to send my family money. so tom was the guy who tryed starting a pipeline but rockefeller shut down the oil plants so he had to lay off train workers but i new how to do oil so he hired me and i ran the pipe line but it fell threw because the worker protested and burnt his trains so he gave me the company not long after that and i started steel buisness and i ran the company by then and my name is andrew carngie. i started making steel mills all over the country and my company was called the carnegie steel company. i was becoming one of the richest men in america its crazy to thing i was just a poor 12 year old revinerey worker now i am considered one of the men who built america.
